Kommeno is one of the most luxurious tourist resorts of Corfu, just 12 km from the town of the island, on a dense hillside cape, dotted with impressive villas and hotel units.
On its north side, the cape is a geographical part of an idyllic bay. This bay features a smaller cove, beaches, tourist facilities, water sports centers, and a large modern marina for boats, sailboats, and seaplanes.
The special morphology of the bay has contributed to transforming a part of it from a cove into a lagoon, which even hosts various species of birds, such as ducks, swans and herons, adding to its natural beauty.
Kommeno in Greek means ‘’cut”, and that is how the bay looks morphologically, hence the name “Kommeno”. As a district, it belongs to the Gouvia village, which has given its name both to the aforementioned bay (Gouvia bay) and to the large beach featured into the bay (Gouvia beach), which is one of the most popular in Corfu.
At the northern end of the bay, there is a vertical strip of land that runs through the sea. At the round end of this “mini peninsula” stands the picturesque church of Ypapantis, which is very popular for weddings and baptisms.
Island hopping: Gouvia bay is a natural connection between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, and a starting point for trips by private seaplanes that operate regular services between Corfu (Greece) Agioi Saranda (Albania)-Avlona (Albania)-Paxos (Greece)-Ioannina (Greece) -Patras (Greece) Kefallinia (Greece) -Lefkada (Greece).
In Gouvia district, as well as in Kommeno and nearby Dassia there are many options for taverns, restaurants, beach bars and beaches. Shopping malls and shops, gourmet restaurants and nightlife can be enjoyed within 15-20 minutes driving distance, at Corfu Town.
